I began training due to an interest in the techniques. I’ve always enjoyed boxing but when you see someone get punched in the face you’re not exactly perplexed as to why that technique works. In Jiu-Jitsu I always enjoyed seeing someone in a seemingly vulnerable position being able to adapt to the situation and turn the tables with a simple and well timed explosive effort and technique. My experiences have all been great and include: getting to learn first hand from a world renown Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, seeing a vast improvement in my endurance, and being able to feel and see the improvements in my techniques throughout training sessions. My short term goal is to obtain a blue belt while the long term goal is to obtain a second degree black belt so obviously I have a long way to go to reach those goals but with Crazy 88‘s guidance and each day of training I feel more and more confident that they are both possible.

Nicole

My name is Nicole and I started at Crazy 88 in December 2009 on the recommendation of a coworker who also belongs to the school, and I absolutely love it here. I came to 88 looking for a fun way to exercise and to learn some self-defense, and I’ve gotten so much more out of it. I was so nervous on my first day that I made my coworker sit through the entire Womens-only Muay Thai class. I didn’t want him to leave me there since I had zero martial arts experience. The coaches and all of the students were so nice and so helpful. Everyone there encouraged me and had patience in teaching me. I was sold after that first hour. And that is just the norm for this place, everyone helps everyone.

Eight months later and we’re all still helping each other to improve. I started out in the womens-only classes, and I now do the coed classes as well. I come to 88 about 5 days a week, for 2-3 hours a day, I’m addicted! I’m having so much fun doing both muay thai and brazilian jiu-jitsu (gi and no-gi). I keep improving, I’m gaining confidence, getting into a different kind of in-shape than I could have ever done at the gym on my own, and I’ve met some absolutely amazing people. I’ve never met so many nice people in one place. The friends I’ve made here I will probably have for life. I always recommend Crazy88 to every woman; the self-defense aspect of everything we’re learning here is fantastic and practical. You cannot put a price on the awesome people, the great work out, the crazy amounts of fun, and the confidence in your ability to defend yourself that you will find at Crazy88.

Stephanie R

My name is Stephanie and I’m the Marketing Coordinator for a global jewelry brand. I was getting sick of hating how out of shape I had gotten but the monotony of getting on a treadmill isn’t very motivating! My husband saw how down I had gotten and found an alternative to your standard workout routine. He pitched the idea of Crazy 88 to me and I was immediately intrigued. I went to my first class in December of 2009 and was so nervous I made my husband tag along and wait in the lobby!  Having never participated in any organized sports before and being completely oblivious to the world of martial arts, I was expecting to fail.

To my surprise, before I even made it into the room for my first class, two students approached me and welcomed me to the school! All of the students helped me get through the class and the instructor was extremely helpful and even went as far as relating the things I was having trouble understanding to dance moves, animals and anything else that would help me get it. That’s just how Crazy 88 is and I was hooked after my first class! I started out doing the women’s only program attending all 4 classes 3 days a week – now 7 months later I participate in both the Women’s and the co-ed Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes and am at Crazy 88 4-5 days a week!

I won’t lie and say these classes are easy but they’re definitely fun – after my very first class I woke up the next morning with muscles I didn’t even know I had aching. I was shocked. How could I have had so much fun and actually gotten a work out? Now after months of training I still feel the burn during every class and I love it! The people here are going to push you to not only meet your expectations but to exceed them. Without the staff and students here, I never would have continued – on the days that I’m just not in the mood to exercise I still attend classes because I want to see the friends I’ve made and don’t want to risk being the only one who didn’t learn a new combination in Muay Thai or submission in Jiu Jitsu.

The school has turned into more than just a place to get healthier though, it is also a home away from home. I’ve met some of my closest friends at the school and have recommended it to everyone I know! I walked in to Crazy 88 knowing absolutely nobody and now I couldn’t imagine my social life without the amazing people I’ve met there.

Alex W

My experience at Crazy 88 has been wonderful! A few months ago I was feeling un-motivated to go to the gym. I was bored with my routine of cardio and lifting, and I felt like I was slowly losing my physical drive.  Crazy 88 has helped me shake those feelings and train harder!

From day one everyone on the Crazy 88 team has made me feel like there is a place for me at the gym!  Classes can be intimidating to a beginner, but instructors and classmates take the time to help me better understand the fundamentals of BJJ and Muay Thai.

The most exciting yet challenging part of training is that there is always something new to learn; this helps keep me on my toes!  Thus far I have learned that, for me, training with others is the most motivating environment!  My goal now is to continue to train and learn the fundamentals and hopefully once I am comfortable get into a competition!

Thank you!

I came to Crazy 88 looking for something to do with my free time instead of just sitting at home playing video games. I did not have much experience with martial arts or wrestling before but decided to try out the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.  I have been doing Jiu-Jitsu here at Crazy 88 for almost five months, staying in shape, learning to defend myself, and making lots of new friends.  I never was much of a competitive person but 3 months into training I decided to compete and won 1st place in a Novice No-Gi NAGA tournament.  Now with each class i look forward to learning new techniques and becoming the best I can be.  I would recommend Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to anybody looking to get in shape, make new friends, compete, or even just as a fun hobby to keep you away from wasting time playing video games.

My decision on choosing a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school was based on team unity. I found that team unity at Team Lloyd Irvin taught by Julius Park. Everyone was friendly, and helped me understand the concepts of all the techniques we would learn each class.

Even during sparring, its not about how fast or how many times you can submit someone.   The goal is to help each other achieve proper technique. After my first introductory class I knew this was the school that I wanted to be associated with.

I’ve trained with schools in Philadelphia to Mississippi, with instructors that would have you drill only techniques without sparring, to instructors that only gave instruction when you’d ask. For the most part the techniques were the same, where a choke was a choke and a pass was a pass. The body only had specific ways to move and the only difference between schools was the subtlety of the explanation.

I would question why is it that the body was most effective moving one way over another, why it was important for me to know how to fall, how does this work, what’s the point of this gi? Whenever I would ask why the answer was always “Because it works” or “Because it makes you a better fighter.” There are very few schools out there that explained the mechanics of how position works, but Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is among that elite group.

You don’t need to look far to see the science behind Julius Park’s method of instruction because it’s apparent with the success & growth of his pupils as well as the at-home feeling you get when you step onto his mats. There have only been two times I’ve gone to schools and walked away knowing that I’ve improved. The first being when I started at MMA / BJJ in Philly and the second is now.

There isn’t anything else that can be said to support what I know about this camp, so if my testimonial and the accolades of others aren’t enough; I’d say come and check it out for yourself, then find a school somewhere else and compare the two — the difference will be almost immeasurable.

After being diagnosed with Reactive Arthritis and falling into terrible shape, I was able to get my disease under control and work my way back into reasonable condition. Able to work out again and back in decent shape, I was left searching for a goal to focus towards. With some wrestling and a bit of judo in my past, I decided to give BJJ a try. I was worried whether my body could take it, though.

I found Lloyd Irvin’s website and the link to Julius’ school, and decided to shoot him an email. He was very understanding of my concerns, and worked with me to ensure all of my worries were addressed. Once I began training with Julius, his instructors, and his other students, I was hooked. I was welcomed quickly into the family of the school, and everyone was friendly, accommodating, and worked together for the improvement of everyone else.

Training at 88BJJ got me into the best shape of my life, even helping me manage and control my bad joints. I learned a tremendous amount from Julius in a short time, as he truly is a great teacher. Yes, bumps and bruises were common, but I came to wear them as badges of honor and reminders of the work I was doing. While never pushed to compete, I was encouraged, and was one of the best decisions I made while at 88BJJ. It gave me a tremendous experience in a short time, and showed me how everything fit together.

It became obvious to me very early that 88BJJ is one of the best schools around, and I would recommend them to anyone in a second. You will learn more, be pushed farther, and gain more confidence than you thought possible. If you show a desire to learn and are willing to work, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. And, on top of all of that, it’s a blast!

Me and Julius go back along time. I met him at a tournament back in 99. I remember that he beat the #1 guy in his weight class and right away I knew that this kid was special.

We’ve been training together for many years and I have had the pleasure of seeing Julius grow into a great fighter and coach. It amazes me to now see Julius creating so many great competitors and passing on the knowledge that he has. I always tell my students to go to his academy and try to learn as much as they can from him.

I’ve been to the very best academies and fight gyms in the world, from Pat Miletich’s gym in Iowa to Brazilian Top Team in Brazil to the Gracie Academy in California, and I know quality instruction when I see it. Julius has made my BJJ game better by leaps and bounds and he can do the same for yours!

I believe some people are just born with the ability to read other people, know what makes them tick, and coach them to their full potential. That’s why I trust Julius Park! I know that he has taken the time to figure me out as a competitor and others as well. His approach to train each of us is unique because we are all unique fighters. He will do the same for you.

He is a competitor himself, a great one, and he knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and he will share this with you. All you need to show in return is heart and discipline. Why did I win Pan Ams? Maybe for a couple of reasons, but you can bet your life on the fact that he was coaching me from the sides, telling me opponents were tougher than they were because he knew that as an individual I perform better that way. A great coach, great competitor, a great friend.

Eric M

My name is Eric McCrory, I have been in the U.S. Army for 17 years. After leaving an overseas assignment I found that my next assignment would be as an instructor to NCOs on many basic Army subject areas, one being a system called the Modern Army Combatives (M.A.C.) which is based on Jiu-Jitsu. Not knowing anything but hand to hand combat techniques from basic training and experience as a JV wrestling dummy in a school of 125 kids 20 years prior, I knew I needed to find a subject matter expert quick.

Knowing that I would be soon sent to Army Combatives School, I searched a 4 state area with the powers of the internet. I searched every forum, chat room and read every magazine article related to the Modern Army Combatives system and Jiu-Jitsu. In my search the Lloyd Irvin School kept popping up and there was one just up the road from my house, so I gave it a try, after all you can’t learn what a school is really about from a website alone. The hardest part was getting out of my car and into the gym the first day…honest. I explained what I needed to get out of this class to Julius on the first day and it seemed as though he wrote a lesson plan specifically for me from then on out.

In the next three months I went as hard and often as my aging body would deem possible at 88 BJJ and learned as much as I could in the short amount of time. I was also sent to Army training for Level 1 and Level 2 Combatives courses which I no longer was worrying over so I was able to enjoy and welcome the training. I actually felt ahead my peers in a sense because I had already seen these moves and how they are properly employed and linked to other moves.

The instruction, conditioning and experience that I got from 88 BJJ in just three months gave me that extra boost and confidence I needed, when I needed it. It allowed me to couple this specialized training in Jiu-Jitsu with my official Army training in M.A.C. making me a more effective soldier. While I don’t claim to be great, I am still learning but I feel great inside just for what I have learned and experienced so far. I will continue to go to class and soak up all the knowledge possible so that I can achieve my new goal of competing in an Army Combatives tournament sometime this year. I don’t have to place as I have already won.

Cynthia

My name is Cynthia Santiago and I am 34 years old. I have been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about a year now. As a teenager I trained a bit in Tae Kwon Do and Judo, but gave it up to compete in high school and college basketball. After my basketball career ended, I didn’t do anything athletic for many years. However, I was always looking for something to fill that void. A few years ago I was watching a UFC fight and knew I wanted to do something like that. I kept thinking about it throughout my teaching year with every intention to research if women could get in on MMA. Last summer I did a search for MMA schools in the Baltimore area and Crazy 88 was the first to come up. I signed up on the website and received a call within a day. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, that’s fast service!” I visited the school and was immediately impressed by the friendliness of the staff and by the fact that there were women training at the school.

Since that day last summer, I started training in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. I loved doing both, but as a busy prep school English teacher and mom, I decided to focus more on jiu-jitsu to get more training in. Jiu-jitsu has definitely filled the void I used to have. I feel mentally and physically challenged in every class I attend. Crazy 88 has everything anyone can ask for: excellent teachers, a lot of classes offered to fit your schedule, a variety of classes offered, and the largest number of women training in the area.

Jiu-Jitsu has definitely changed my life. It has given me a personal purpose. It has also motivated me to get in shape, has provided an outlet for my competitive spirit, and has relieved a lot of my general stress and anxiety that used to consume me. I even recently convinced my partner to try a class and she is hooked. I can’t say enough about what a great school Julius Park is running. My only suggestion is to come in and try out a class. Trust me, you will become addicted like the rest of us.

I have been attending Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes at Crazy 88 in Elkridge for just about two years. Within this short period of time, I have come to realize why Crazy 88 is a phenomenal school. The instruction is quality, and is taught by dedicated and committed teachers. Each instructor shares updated techniques, encourages their students to hold nothing back, and pushes them to go deeper, to strive for excellence. Mediocrity is unacceptable. Crazy 88 classes are strenuous and challenging, yet extremely fun, causing students to reach their fullest potential. My overall experience has been absolutely outstanding, and I highly recommend becoming part of the Crazy 88 team!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become such an innate part of my life so quickly I don’t even remember my how my life was before it.  I am a student intern at the Department of Defense and I am a Criminal Justice major at AAAC.  I am also currently a Blue Belt in Jiu Jitsu and I train everyday.

I didn’t have any martial arts experience before starting jiu jitsu – I ran in High School.  I started training because I really wanted to learn how to defend myself.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most legit martial art out there and I am very glad to have walked into Crazy 88.  I have developed a lot of friendships through training here.

In May, I traveled to Brazil for the Brasileiro’s and it was eye-opening. It’s a different world down there.   It was my first experience at an International tournament and it broke the ice for competing at that level.  I am not nervous about going to the Worlds or really competing at all anymore.

I would recommend training here for anyone who wants to challenge themselves mentally and physically.

Tim S

My name is Tim Spriggs and I am a member of Team Lloyd Irvin, and I have trained at Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for three years. When I first looked for a place to train, I went online, called gyms, and asked people who trained. Through my research I was lucky enough to find a place close to my house that had a good reputation. The first day I walked in, I was given an one-on-one introductory course with an accomplished upper belt. In that short session, I was shown the basics of Jiu-Jitsu such as positions and submissions.

As soon as I started training at Crazy 88 I was treated like a part of the team, there is a very close knit family-like atmosphere at the gym. My teammates helped me in the process of progressing in the sport. I wasn’t beaten on every day and used as wrestling dummy, everyone tried to make each other better. I was helped in a lot of ways, for instance in getting in shape. I came into Jiu-Jitsu with decent physical ability, and was slight conditioned. But, over time I realized that to compete at an elite level, I needed to progress. I used to not be able to hold on to a rope, let alone climb it. I was put on a strength and conditioning program which I would do after class, and eventually, I was able to climb the rope at will.

The training at Crazy 88 is top notch. Julius Park is a great instructor with a bunch of experience. He’s been in the game for a long time and is one of the most knowledgeable instructors you can find, anywhere. Being affiliated with Lloyd Irvin exposes you to some of the best competitors in the world everyday.  And we have very accomplished fighters come in for seminars, like Bruno Frazatto, Kenny Florian, and the Avellan Brothers. Team Lloyd Irvin is the best team in this part of the country; they weren’t named Grappler’s Quest Team of the Decade for nothing. The training I get here day in and day out makes competitions easy for me. When I talk to people at other schools about my experiences in the sport, accomplishments and things that go on at my school, and they are surprised and impressed. That’s how I know I am a part of something special, and it makes me proud to be a part of Crazy 88.

I have been training at Crazy 88 for six months now and can’t see myself doing anything else.  A friend brought me in one day to try it and I signed up that day.  This was my first time doing anything  athletic and the staff and students here have been helping me every step of the way.  When I came in, I weighed 200 pounds and since I’ve been training here, I weigh 160 pounds and know that I’m in the best shape of my life.

I’ve concentrated on training in Jiu Jitsu since I’ve started here and couldn’t be happier. I work as a commercial plumber and before joining, I had never traveled much further then Maryland. Since I started, I’ve traveled to many places I didn’t see myself going including Florida, New York, and next week I’m going to California for the first time.  Crazy 88 has opened my eyes to a whole new world that I never knew existed before.   Not only have I learned many things inside the gym, but I’ve learned many things outside of the gym from the staff.  Jiu Jitsu has helped me in all aspects, from losing weight and being healthier, to helping me relax more making every day easier.  I believe Crazy 88 is a wonderful environment for anyone that wants to come to learn Martial Arts.

Fillers Family

Its a true family affair for the Filler clan as they all train at Crazy 88 BJJ.  It all started with their son, Seth, who was one of the first children enrolled in the program and has grown into one Crazy 88′s best competitors.  In 2010, Seth and family flew to Los Angeles to participate in the first Brazilian Jujitsu Children’s Pan Am tournament.  Seth is also a successful athlete in other sports such football and baseball.

After enrolling his son, father Chip began his MMA training and is a regular at the school despite a rigorous occupational travel schedule.  Chip participates in the entire spectrum of realistic martial arts, learning to throw elbows and knees in the Thai Boxing class and then putting the gi on for some traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Mother, Amanda, and daughter, Vanessa, joined later, getting involved in the Kids program and the Muay Thai classes.  Vanessa has been improving at a remarkable pace and just began competing this year in grappling tournaments.  Mother Amanda was a regular in our Muay Thai classes and BJJ and recently began helping out with the Kids program as an assistant!

Jason & Son

Jason had been training at Crazy 88 for about 18 months at the time of the gym review above.  Jason is retired military and has some wrestling experience, both as a wrestler and as an assistant kids coach. Jason was presented with Crazy 88′s 2009 Student of the Year award for his no-excuses mentality and his obvious dedication to his family and his children.  His commitment to the team is also notable; Jason has shown up multiple times to our 3 AM White Belt Competition Team Tryouts to help out despite working normal hours and already having made the Competition Team.

Jason might be part of Crazy 88′s first and (at the time of this writing) only Father-Son competition duo.  He and his kids both compete regularly in grappling tournaments and do quite well.

He has had a few of his children participate in the program (they are a very athletic family) and they love complementing their wrestling with the Children’s Martial Arts Program.  Currently, his son Jaron is a regular student in the Juniors Program which is intended for ages 11-14.

Tyrone was a former Maryland High School State Wrestling Medalist.  After graduating from college, he began work as an accountant but wanted to get into something competitive again.  His brother, who was already a Blue Belt at Crazy 88, referred him to the school which he promptly joined. He loves the intensity of the Martial Arts program and now competes regularly in grappling tournaments.  Just by attending classes consistently, he was able to shed twenty pounds!

Tyrone participates in the following training programs:

Brian

My name is Brian Neal and I have been training at Crazy 88 BJJ for a little over a year. There were several reasons that factored into my decision when choosing which school to train at.

I wanted to find a school that had a quality kids program. My son Tyler is almost six-years old now and loves coming to train what he calls “boo jitsu”. Danny Ives is the head instructor for the kids program and I have to say that I wouldn’t take my son anywhere else. In just the first few months, I could see a significant increase in Tyler’s motor skills. There were things, like cartwheels, that he (as well as the rest of the class) couldn’t do early on but now they just fly down the mats!

Danny also taught my son early on the value of following rules. There are ten basic rules that the kids have to follow and Tyler, like any kid, tested those rules and broke one. He was punished by losing a stripe from his belt, which set him behind the rest of his fellow students. It worked because Tyler hasn’t broken that rule since and has actually EARNED his stripe back. I, like most parents, never want to see their child being picked on or bullied. I know that I will never have to worry about that with Tyler but I also never have to worry about Tyler using anything he learns in class unneccessarily because of the self-discipline that Danny teachs.

Another reason was to create friendships for not only myself, but Tyler as well. Being here for as long as I have has afforded me the opportunity to help out with the kid’s class on occasion, and that’s allowed me to meet all of the parents at one point or another and get to know them. We recently held a fundraiser to help purchase a television set for the kids (adults as well) and every parent “stepped up” to the plate and helped make it the best fundraiser to date! It’s nice to see the parents taking a vested interest in the school as well as its progression.

I came to Crazy 88 a little over year ago now and it has really been a wonderful experience, not only for me but also for my entire family. We originally looked into it for my husband who loves to watch MMA and was really interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I was interested because I wanted to find a sport that would mix well with my other favorite activities; weight lifting and trail running.

About six months ago, Julius started the Kids program and we enrolled our 4 year old daughter. And she absolutely loves it! The kid’s program teaches her teamwork, fosters confidence, and is an excellent outlet for all her extra energy. And last but not least, Crazy 88 really has the best instructors around. I have learned so much from all of them, especially Julius, who never ceases to be supportive and provide excellent advice.

Bonnie

My son Brendan is 9 years old, and in his short lifetime, I have attempted to involve him in the following sports: Kenpo karate, horseback riding, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and ice hockey. About 2 years ago, I simply gave up trying to find something he would like, and I began to seriously worry that video games and television would remain his only interests. I firmly believe that every child needs something to be passionate about in order to stay out of trouble, but no matter what we signed upfor, Brendan lacked enthusiasm. Being an intensely competitive person myself, this was totally foreign to me, but I certainly didn’t want to force him into doing something he hated.

This past January, my husband andI were looking online for a place where we might be able to train, and quite by accident stumbled onto Crazy 88 BJJ. For some reason Brandon (my husband) thought Brendan might take to grappling due to its physicality, but I was skeptical due to past experience–after all, even Kenpo hadn’t proven fast-paced enough to hold his interest AT ALL. We went to the gym to take an adult intro class and immediately were struck by the friendliness of the staff and the professional atmosphere, along with the top quality credentials of the instructors. The fact that classes were being taught by national and international gold medalists was pretty impressive! At that time we learned from Julius that they were just about to begin a Children’s program, so we decided to hold off on our own training goals and sign Brendan up. His first class was mid-February 2008.

Brendan took to BJJ like the proverbial duck to water, and has now been training for almost 6 months. We drive an hour from Westminster to make it to the gym, but he doesn’t complain about the long commute and looks forward to every practice.  He is ALWAYS the smallest kid in his school class (9 years old and 45 lbs!), but he is no longer so upset when he is teased about his size– he has developed so much more confidence in himself now that he knows he has nothing to prove.

Last time the class bully tried to physically fight with him, Brendan easily extricated himself but was careful to use only enough force to restrain the other child without ever hurting him. I know that this is because of the responsible instruction he has received from his amazing coach, Danny Ives– I truly cannot say enough about him. He takes a personal, vested interest in Brendan’s development, not just as a competitor, but as a human being. Danny is careful to teach that attitude and effort mean more than anything else when it comes to being a winner. The kids at 88BJJ know that what they are taught in class involves much more than a cool combat method– they are taught how to use what they learn responsibly, for the protection of themselves and others. Brendan has learned from Danny that perfect technique IS necessary, but that it’s not enough in and of itself– the heart of a fighter is his most important asset.

Just in case anyone thinks that character development is all the kids at 88BJJ are learning, I’ll just mention one more thing. When Brendan had been training for about 6 weeks, we entered him in his very first tournament (NAGA Virginia, April ’08), and he surprised us all by bringing home two silver medals! After that first taste of competition, he was completely hooked. On the drive home from that tournament, he was already asking when he could fight again, and trying to analyze what he would do better next time in order to get a gold medal instead of silver. His chance came two days ago (US Grappling, 8/2/08). In the first division, No Gi, he got to the finals match and took a silver medal once again, just like last time. Then in the second division (Gi) he rallied back, was able to beat the child who had beaten him in the No Gi, and went on to fight in the championship match, where he was able to bring home his first GOLD!

If you are looking for that very rare place that is able to combine top-notch technical instruction with the highest ethical standards, then your search should end with Crazy 88 BJJ. After the excellent teaching and genuine love that Brendan has experienced there, we wouldn’t entrust our child to anyone else.

Prior to training at 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I trained another local school. After a few months at this school, my improvement plateaued out. A friend who was training at 88 BJJ invited me to try out the school. I immediately noticed the difference between the schools.

My first impression was how well 88 BJJ was organized. For example, areas in which students were experiencing difficulties were listed on the monthly syllabus and stressed in class. Also, I noticed the Julius’ dedication toward his students. Despite the high turnout of students, Julius met with each student and provided detailed input on how he or she could refine his or her technique.

After less than six months of training, I have noticed significant improvement in my technique. Julius has worked closely with me to develop a style (“game plan”) that fits my strengths and body type. I would recommend 88 BJJ to anyone interested in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Rachel

I started taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Crazy 88 in May 2009 at the age of 41, having never done anything athletic in my life, much less a competitive martial art. Little did I know that Crazy 88 would quickly become my home away from home, and its members my extended family. I began with one class per week and was barely able to complete the warm-up exercises at first. However, I was so motivated by Julius Park, as well as the other instructors and students, that I soon progressed to two, and then to three and four classes per week.

As an attorney and mother of two young children, I would have sworn I had no more time in my day but somehow I found it! Jiu jitsu has enhanced every aspect of my life; its challenges are as much mental as physical, as are its rewards. Jiu jitsu has gotten me into the best cardiovascular shape of my life and it provides a wonderful outlet for my competitive nature.

I highly recommend Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to anyone, regardless of age or gender. Everyone is so friendly and encouraging, and the instruction is hands-on with a great deal of individualized attention. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join this extraordinary team of teachers and students.

The reason I got into the Muay Thai program at Crazy 88 is that I was looking for something that would be good stress release and give me a head to toe workout… and I realized I’m at that point in my life where I can’t just eat whatever I want and not gain a pound anymore. (I have a thing for chili cheese fries.) I remember being shocked the first week of class when the coach had us focusing on kicks and my abs hurt the next morning and later when I learned to throw a punch and could feel it in my calves. I was really worried the first class I showed up to, that being the new kid, noone would be willing to work with me or take things slower so I could keep up but it was just the opposite; the women in my class were eager to show me the technique and break it down for me til I understood and the instructor has a way of teaching class that is very beginner-friendly but leaves room to build combinations and focus on technique as you get more comfortable and confident with the sport. I’ve been taking the same Muay Thai classes with the same teacher, Jason, three times a week for six months now and in every class I learn at least one new thing, which is awesome, and makes me feel like I’m building a solid foundation for the sport piece by piece.

Sometime, when I’m ready, I’d like to try competing in an amateur Muay Thai fight and see how it goes from there. I have a lot more to learn before then but then again I’m surprised and proud of where I am now already so I think it’s a definite personal goal. Some of the people I train with at the gym are very inspiring, sharing the details of their own wins and losses, what they’ve learned, and pretty much everybody at Crazy 88 is really supportive but genuine and constructive with their criticism too. The girls I train with are quick to point out any areas I need to improve on and push me to work harder and sweat more every class. Sounds like torture, but it’s a good thing.

I think the Muay Thai program at Crazy 88 is fantastic and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good workout (and later, a good night’s sleep) or a way to make new friends. If you’re at all interested in watching or appreciating MMA or kickboxing, I think it’d benefit you to take a deeper interest in the sport and try the whole experience.

Greg

I was previously training at another Jiu Jitsu school but I started to become unsatisfied with my results. Low intensity workouts, little to no students, and nobody wanted to compete. I was also unsatisfied about my weight.

In November, I attended WLC (Warrior Leader Course) in order to be up for promotion (to Sergeant). I am in the Maryland Army National Guard. I weighed in at around 180 lbs. A month later, my brother informed me that he has been training at Crazy 88 BJJ; he suggested that I check it out. I signed up shortly after attending the orientation.

I always get a good workout whenever I come to class, a lot of the students actively compete or have competed, and everybody seems to get along with one another. At my previous school, there was a lot of ego. That was also one of the reasons why I was becoming unsatisfied. At Crazy 88, you’re motivated to test yourself by competing in BJJ tournaments. I competed in my first tournament in January and weighed in at 158. I must say that my first tournament is only the first of many.

Greg trains in:

Ben L

Ben comes from a background in traditional martial arts and was looking for something different when he enrolled at our Baltimore Mixed Martial Arts School.  He began training when Crazy 88 was renting out a 600 square foot room at a local fitness gym and has seen the school grow to its current 6000 square foot location.  Ben was also there to witness the expansion of the Crazy 88 BJJ schedule from when it consisted only of three Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes a week to the current 7 Days a Week, 18 hours a Day form.

Within the last year, Ben enrolled his daughter into the Childrens Martial Arts program.   Despite not even being regular school yet, she can already perform many real self-defense techniques and also has lots of fun socializing with the other students in the class.

Ben is also an avid competitor and has fought in pretty much everything -- BJJ tournaments, No-Gi, and just recently, he won his first Muay Thai smoker bout by 2nd round KO.

Nathan trains like a true Mixed Martial Artist and participates regularly in grappling, mma, and thai boxing classes.

Amie

When I was eight years-old, I had a sudden interest in martial arts. My parents had no idea where my sudden interest came from, but they thought that since I was such an introverted child this might help me.

At the time, I was not talking to anyone outside of my family and had only a few friends. I was shy and nervous in school which caused me to have low self-esteem and little confidence. I was brought to martial arts school that taught Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing. I liked the kickboxing, but I lived for the Jiu Jitsu.

After a week or two, lots of things began to change. I found myself more confident in the gym which in turn led to confidence outside of the gym. Little by little, I began to open up and talk to more people. I made more friends and excelled in school. I began to compete which was another huge confidence boost. Competing allowed me to travel across the world, from California to Brazil, to face other competitors and test my abilities.

As I got older and faced more challenging situations, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became my outlet. While kids from school were going to parties and experimenting with drugs, I was doing something productive. Because I loved Jiu Jitsu so much, that made it easy to avoid peer pressure and avoid doing stupid things that could ruin everything I had been working for.

Even now in college, most kids go out and party and do things that could get them in trouble. I study for my tests and hang around with my close friends. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has instilled in me the right qualities. I only wish I would have started younger.

I have been training at Crazy 88 and cannot recommend it enough.  From my first email asking questions, the staff was amazingly helpful.  They answered all of my questions, and since I was new to martial arts, addressed all of my concerns.

I chose to initially concentrate on Muay Thai.  Coach Jason is amazing.  He is happy to take the time not only to answer any and all questions you may have on a technique, but to show it to you so that you understand it and can execute it.  I’m impressed how the class can be tailored to the individual.  If you want only a workout, it’s probably the best there is, and not boring and always challenging.  If you want to go beyond a workout, let coach Jason know, he will spend the extra time with you to make sure you have greater grasp of the techniques and when the time is right, suggest the advanced Muay Thai classes, where more advanced combinations and techniques are shown.  Since I started, the Muay Thai program has grown, with more instructors and classes added.  Coach Aung-La now has a Sunday morning class that’s not to be missed.

I have recently decided to start my Jiu-Jitsu training.  The Jiu-Jitsu coaches are all very passionate about the sport, and you can’t help be share their enthusiasm as you train.  They are always walking the mats to ensure everyone has learned the techniques shown and make sure to point out anything that needs work.  I am confident that they will show me the way to becoming successful in Jiu-Jitsu.

Considering how much potential one would think would be there for injury, it’s almost non-existent.  The coaches are always on the lookout to ensure training is safe, and are quick to intervene if safety ever becomes a concern. Along these lines, the school is incredibly clean.  Why would you care?  Considering the close contact you have with the mats, other students, etc. it’s very important to practice in a clean facility.

A final note that was a real eye-opener for me personally, was the lack of ego.  Sure, we have a competition team and lots of very talented students/fighters, but they are all very humble and happy to offer their knowledge to help you improve your game.  Another thing that surprised me was the school’s owner/head instructor, Julius Park.  He is very friendly and approachable, and takes a genuine interest in your training.  I don’t know how he remembers everyone’s name.  After researching martial arts schools, and attending a few sample classes elsewhere before joining Crazy 88, one thing I know is that Julius runs a great school and has the best instructors you’re likely to find.

Derek Petty

Derek works in Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and still comes in for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training despite working long hours.  The flexible class schedule of Crazy 88 that has classes in the mornings, early evenings, as well as late evenings allows Derek to train when he wants to train rather than having to change his schedule.

Derek is a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has competed with good results winning Gold in multiple Masters divisions.  He is a great guy to have in the room and fits in well with the positive attitude at the gym.

Derek trains in:

Mike Atkin

If you have been to our website before, you have undoubedly seen Mike Atkin on it.  Mike is an inspiration to everyone at our Baltimore MMA school because he started his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in his late-forties and lost close to 80 lbs.  He went on to win multiple International competition medals including Double Gold medals at the International Masters and Seniors in Rio de Janeiro (the World Championships for grapplers above 30 years of age).  Currently, Mike is one of the instructors at the school where he passes on his knowledge gleaned from years of wrestling and BJJ.

The real story here is Mike’s relationship with his grandson, who recently began training at Crazy 88 and has really fallen in love with training – this works out great for both of them as they now have an activity that they can both do together.  Mike and his grandson are just two of the many family members  that are all training together at Crazy 88.

Mike trains in:

Sonny serves in the US Military and became interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after being exposed to Modern Army Combatives, the martial arts system used by the Army that is based on Jiu Jitsu.   Looking to get more indepth training in submission grappling than what the Army teaches, Sonny and his brother joined Crazy 88.  After a year and a half, Sonny has competed in multiple Jiu-Jitsu competitions, winning most of them, and has earned his Blue Belt.  Despite working at strange hours, Sonny always finds a way a train and you can often his children, playing in the lobby area.

Mike G

Mike is a veteran of the US military having served four years as a member of the Marine Corps. Currently working in the finance sector, he is a very busy individual, often traveling from Maryland to New York and back in the same day.  Yet Mike still makes time to come in and get his martial arts training in. Mike focuses primarily on Muay Thai Kickboxing and is currently training for his first amateur smoker bout.

Mike loves the friendliness of the other students as well as the solid rapport between the coaching staff and the students.  After all, its not just the techniques that keep people training but the relationships they build.  We are proud to have Mike as part of our family.
